Future: Envisoning a World Beyond
Inspired by the surreal, fantastical artists Hieronymus Bosch, Jacek Yerka, and Vladimir Kush, and the futuristic author of “The World Without Us” Alan Weisman, I have been fascinated by world-building – the art of constructing fictional worlds. I am particularly interested in building worlds in the distant future, where nature is the protagonist.

Our view of the world and our capacity to imagine the future are limited by the timespan in which we think. We are hyper-fixated on matters that are here and now, while our perception of the future is hopelessly low-resolution beyond just a few decades. For example, our environment concerns deal with reducing carbon emission and saving wildlife, while we are largely ignorant about longer-term impact of our creations including radioactive waste and generative AI, as well as other forms of destruction and annihilation. This myopia is existentially ironic considering that modern humans have survived for 200,000 years and life on earth has for 3.8 billion years. We should gaze into the distant future for the sake of nature and humankind.
As an artist, I attempt to change our view of the world by inserting a vastly different timeframe in our consciousness. Do we have the capacity to imagine the world beyond a few hundred years? Will nature erase or integrate the traces of human civilization – our achievements as well as our wrongdoings? Will the world without humans hold a meaning? Questions such as these motivate my explorations and fuel my artistic creations. Through my artwork, I invite viewers to explore these and other questions about the future world and the eventuality of humanity – and draw implications on the frame of mind we should have as the generation in charge for the future of humankind. I hope that my artwork will encourage others to express and exchange their views and imaginations of the future world.
